Gene's Famous Seafood on the eastern side of New Bedford Harbor is a little taffy-box of a place, but very clean and neat, with picnic tables both inside and out. The tabletops have been laminated, with maps of the local ocean waters embedded in them. And though there's no water view outside, the decor will definitely put you in a nautical mood. Tales of plates piled high with clams and scallops and shrimp made our mouths water.

Cuisine: American / NE Inns & Taverns
Price: $$$$
General Stanton Inn has a comfortable atmosphere and a capable chef. Chef Jean-Claude Bourlier’s menu, while not exactly innovative, is Continental (roasted duckling, lamb chops with mint sauce) with a splash of California (macadamia nut-encrusted halibut with Thai peanut sauce). Interspersed among this is what Bourlier does best: classic French.
